At the 4th District year-end lunch on Thursday June 8th,
2006, the Capistrano Valley High
School PTSA was awarded the “Outstanding
Unit Award” for 2005/2006. The 4th District
includes all of Orange County and a small
portion of LA County. President
Barbara Casserly was in attendance to accept
the award on behalf of the PTSA. Thank you
to all who participated in CVHS PTSA this
year for making this happen.
The following is the announcement from
the 4th District:
OUTSTANDING UNIT AWARD
CAPISTRANO VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL PTSA
(Capistrano Council)
Barbara Casserly, President
Capistrano Valley High School PTSA chose
“Celebrating Cougar Pride” as their theme
this year. Their goal was to reflect the
pride they feel in their school, but also to
ensure that the PTSA board was reflective of
their diverse student body. There are seven
men on their board, and board members from
each of their feeder schools as well as two
student board members and a Latino group
parent leader.
Capistrano
Valley High School PTSA kicked off their
year with a new program, “Parent
Orientation,” during which parents were
welcomed and educated about what to expect
in high school. By providing interesting
programs as well as door prizes, attendance
at their meetings is up, and membership is
up 50%.
In February,
they celebrated “Take Your Family to School
Week,” a Founders’ Day event and opportunity
for feeder school PTA executive boards to
discover the high school their children will
soon attend.
Strong parent
education programs is the hallmark of Capo
Valley High School PTSA, programs such as
“Crash Proof Your Teen,” and “The Essentials
of Teen Driving.” Mini-parent ed programs
follow PTSA meetings, on topics such as drug
education, involvement in high school
athletics, and class selection & scheduling.
This PTSA is
also active in advocacy. Information is sent
to parents via email, and through their
website. This PTSA took an active role in
defeating Proposition 76. Through guest
speakers, postcard campaigns and electronic
communications, Capistrano Valley High
School PTSA helped to defeat Prop. 76 while
educating parents about their role as
advocates.
With no past
student involvement in their PTSA, this year
two students were recruited to serve as
Reflections chairmen. Students also assisted
the PTSA by helping with data entry and
campus beautification.
